Boko Haram activities sacked 11 Customs border stations in Northeast

The Customs Area Comptroller in charge of Borno/Yobe Area Command, Mr. Angbalaga Joshua Jesse on Tuesday, said only two out of thirteen functional border stations that are officially known to Customs are currently carrying out skeletal services due to activities of Boko Haram insurgents in northeast, Nigeria

Speaking during an interactive session with journalists in Maiduguri on the activities of the command since his taking over in April, Mr. Joshua said, due to the insecurity, the command was given a target of sixty-two million naira (N62,000,000.00) revenue to generate, adding that, they were able to hit seventy-five million naira (N75,000,000.00), and hoped to hit one hundred million naira (N100,000,000.00) by the end of this year.

He said the activities of Boko Haram in the command’s area of jurisdiction had also affected revenue generation of the command, especially during rainy season, as most of the trucks had diverted to other routes, thereby affecting revenue generation in the command.

He also said that a lot of traders, particularly along Ngamboru road, were affected by the activities of the Boko Haram insurgents.

He added that within the period under review, about thirteen (13) trucks belonging to traders were burnt down at different time along the Ngamboru road, thereby affecting the economy of the people.

Speaking further on other factors affecting revenue generation of the command, he said, “most of the imports into Nigeria from countries bordering Borno and Yobe Command are essentially agricultural produce.

“It therefore, means that their availability reduces and so does revenues generated from import activities.”
