There is heavy military presence around Jiddari Polo area of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital following Wednesday’s attack by Boko Haram fighters, who stormed the capital and engaged security operatives in fierce fight that lasted several hours.
Many residents who returned home this morning after fleeing their homes last night said they found their houses burnt and vandalise by the militants.
Mr. Philip Umoru who spoke to DAILY POST thanked God for delivering his family from the insurgents, but, however said that, he lost everything in the house as the militants vandalized and burnt down his house.
“We are okay, but it is sad. We do not know why the sudden attack when we are thinking that everything is becoming normal,” he said.
Other residents around Custom area said, bomb blasts during the attack as well as stray bullets left 8 people dead, while about 37 others were wounded and are receiving medical attention at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
“This is very sad. I spoke to a live witness at CBDA (Chad Basin Development Authority),who said they conveyed 8 corpses and 37 injured to Teaching Hospital. He said the attack occurred at 4 different locations; CBDA mosque, Inside Lake Chad Research Institute, opposite College of Agric and a mosque at a place called Goni Kachallari; all around the CBDA axis. But let’s wait for the officials,” a security source said.
Another resident who spoke on the attack said added: ” Very true, my cousin who live in CBDA quarters with her 10 children told me exactly the same thing this morning and even added that, some of the victims were her children’s friends with ages ranging from twelve upwards.”
Staff of Lake chad research institute were seen in group discussing the unfortunate event.
Speaking to some of them, they told DAILY POST that, a female suicide bomber attacked a family within their staff quarters during the attacks last night and that a woman and four of her children are currently in critical situation at the UMTH.
According to them, there was an attack at the main gate of the chad basin development authority as well as another inside a mosque where five people were reportedly killed by a suicide bomber.
Officially, neither the Police nor the military have made any official statement, except that they have continued to urge people to remain calm.
