Over 1000 internally displaced persons from Gubio local government area of Borno state have received fertilizer to boost their farming activities.
The Caretaker Chairman of Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State, Hon Zanna Modu Gubio said 40 tonnes of two trucks of fertilizers and other farm implements were made available to farmers free through the collaborative effort of the State Government under Kashim Shettima.
Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday, after the distribution at the Palace of the District Head of the Council, the Chairman thanked governor Kashim Shettima for giving him the free hand to operate and for supporting the local government in the effort to return thousands of displaced persons back to their home.
He added that the distribution would go along way in encouraging farmers both during rainy and dry season farming.
The gesture according to Gubio was not only to cushion the hardship, but also encourage most of the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, who had since returned to their liberated communities.
He said that his administration procured the 800 bags of Fertilizers from the State Government at subsidized rate of N3,500 each, among other improved seedlings and implements, and decided to give it out free of charge to over 1000 households in communities of Gubio to promote agricultural practice, being the major occupation of its citizenry.
His words: “At this point in time, my administration has no choice than to assist; we want to reorganise farmers and reawaken them because agriculture is key to our economy.
“We must give these items free to encourage them; it is our target to ensure people embrace farming by going back to agriculture for sustainable development.
“This gesture is ongoing, and we will ensure every farmer benefits irrespective of political considerations”, Gubio stated.
Earlier in his Vote of Thanks on behalf of the farmers and people of the Council, Chairman of Farmers Association and the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC Chairman in Gubio, Baba Lawan and Mallam Dogo Ahmed expressed gratitude to the Caretaker Chairman for addressing the plights of the people, and pledged their unflinching support for peace, unity and Progress of the Area.
