Mrs. Alice Ebun Gbonigi, wife of the foremost Nationalist, Bishop Emmanuel Bolanle Gbonigi [Retired] is dead.
The retired Anglican Bishop’s wife died this morning around 10.am at the age of 81 after battling with a protracted ailment.
The deceased illness was said to have become complicated since the past nine days, forcing the family to rush her to hospital where she was admitted for some days.
According to her first daughter, Omolara Gbonigi who spoke with reporters at Gbonigi’s residence in Oba-ile Estate, Akure North local government area of Ondo State said her mother was discharged three days ago after she was relieved of her illness.
She noted that they were hoping she would recover at home, but gave up the ghost despite their efforts.
Her words, “My mum was a strong woman. I think the sickness was due to her old age. She had been experiencing this sickness for the past two years but became worse nine days ago. We rushed her to the hospital and she was attended to by doctors.
“She was discharged three days ago hoping that she will be feeling better at home but to our surprise the sickness returned and became worse last night. We were calling Doctors before she died this morning [Saturday morning] around 10 am.
She said “I am going to miss a lot of things about her because we learnt a lot from her. She was very hardworking when she was still fit. My Mother always ensure she gets herself busy as she was always there to support my father.
“Anytime my mummy is not busy, that means she is not feeling too well. She was very honest and God fearing. I have been around taking care of her since she took ill and she died in my hand. I am going to miss her”
Baba Gbonigi refused to speak with pressmen, saying that he was not in the state of mind to speak on the death of his loving wife.
The retired Bishop only sat in his sitting room, receiving sympathizers who besieged his house.
Among the callers in his residence were the leader of Afenifere group, Pa’ Rueben Fasoranti, spiritual leaders, among others.
