In order to control the outbreak of Avian Influenza, also known as Bird Flu in Anambra State, the state government has advised members of the public to wash their hands with soap and clean water after contact with birds and poultry products. The people have also been advised to ensure that all poultry meat and eggs are thoroughly cooked before consumption.
In a statement made by the Commissioner of Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Barr Mrs. Uju Nwogu,“members of the public are advised to observe personal hygiene and to wash their hands with soap and clean water after contact with birds and poultry product.”
Nwogu urged the public to be cautious of their environment and “ report any case” of the deadly disease to any veterinary clinic close to them.
“The Symptoms of the disease include fever, sneezing, cough, diarrhea, trouble breathing, general ill feeling, muscle aches, runny nose and sore throat.
”They should also ensure that all poultry meat and eggs are thoroughly cooked before eating. All poultry farmers in the state are also advised to clean their surroundings, and to report cases of sick birds to the nearest veterinary clinic,” the statement reads.
The diseases which is usually common among birds but can be transferred to man can also be transmitted through direct contact with infected birds or poultry materials.
The statement further urged all veterinary officers in the state to, “Commence surveillance/sensitization visits particularly at Live-bird markets in the state to avoid the contact and spread of the flu.”
