Embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu has filed an $800m Dollars suit against the Federal Government at the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS court sitting in Abuja for violation of his human rights.
Kanu who filed the suit through his legal team, Hon. Ifeanyi Ejiofor Esq. and Chinwe C. Umeche on March 2, 2016, is seeking the court to declare that his arrest and detention since October 14, 2015, despite several order of court granting him bail, is unlawful.
Also joined in the suit is the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF and Minister of Justice, as well as the Director-General of State Security Services, DSS.
The embattled leader is also seeking declaration of the ECOWAS court saying his continued incarceration constitutes a breach of Nigerian’s human rights obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights; the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and other International Human Rights Treaties to which Nigeria is a party.
