There was pandemonium at the Benue State House of Assembly on Thursday as miscreants stormed the complex while a session was on and ejected the lawmakers.
They ostensibly were acting on an order to block the day’s proceedings.
The House had convened on November 8 (yesterday), with an agenda to begin impeachment process against its Speaker, David Iorhemba.
But on hearing news that he may be sent packing by colleagues, Iorhermba quickly submitted his resignation letter to the Clerk of the House, Torese Agena, on Thursday.
Deputy Speaker, Stephen Onmeje, read the letter to the members. He said Iorhemba cited personal reasons for his resignation and that it took effect from Wednesday (November 7).
During remarks by the lawmakers, a legislator, Baba Odeh, said that “members did not have any other option than to accept the letter.”
Odeh then moved a motion that the seat of the Speaker be declared vacant and be filled without delay.
Another legislator, Benjamin Adanyi, seconded the motion.
Deputy Speaker, Onmeje said members had no objection to the resignation and declared the post of the speaker vacant.
