Benue PDP rejects Sheriff as chairman, backs Makarfi

The Benue State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has strongly kicked against the verdict by an appellant court sitting in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, which recognized, Ali Modu Sheriff as the authentic leader of the party.

The party, while reacting to the verdict, said the judgment did not go down well with members of the party.

PDP in a statement by Bemgba Iortyom, the State Publicity Secretary, said the party was behind Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee.

The statement reads:

“Our attention has been drawn to the judgment on Thursday by the Court of Appeal sitting in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, which declared Senator Ali Mohdu Sherrif as the authentic National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In line with views expressed by the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of our great party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, we dismiss the judgment as a sham and a travesty of justice, even as we restate our unalloyed support and loyalty to the Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee.

The Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee did accuse the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of planning to turn Nigeria into a one-party state through that unfortunate court judgement.

The National Caretaker Committee said in a statement which read in part, “Two out of the 3 man Justices of the Appeal Court gave a scanty judgment in favour of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff while one for Makarfi.

The Judgment has finally shown that the ruling Party, the APC is out to create a one party state in the country.

The Party is proceeding immediately to the Supreme Court to file an appeal against the ruling of today’s appeal court judgment.”

We therefore urge all PDP faithful in Benue State to remain calm and unperturbed by the judgment as we await the final determination of the matter at the apex court.‎”
