The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Friday reacted to report that some police officers allegedly murdered an Assistant Superintendent of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Ogar Ochigbo, in the presence of his wife and children.

Reports had it that the police officers allegedly beat up the NSCDC Assistant Superintendent to death in Nyanya area of Abuja.

The police, however, debunked the report that its officers beat Ochigbo to death, saying he slumped.

However, Ortom has now urged the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Abubakar Adamu to ensure that justice is serve in the matter.

A statement from the Governor’s spokesperson, Terver Akase, reads: “Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom urges the Inspector General of Police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Ogar Jumbo Ochigbo, an Assistant Superintendent of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) who was allegedly murdered in the presence of his wife and children by some police officers near Nyanya market, Abuja on Wednesday this week.

“Governor Ortom condemns the killing of Mr Ochigbo, an indigene of the State and calls on the Police Inspector General to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice”

Describing the act as barbaric, heartless, and a violation of the sanctity of human life, Ortom sympathised with Ochigbo’s wife and kids who went through the “trauma of watching their father being murdered in cold blood.”

He wondered why officers of different security organisations instead of collaborating to ensure a safer society would engage in an action leading to the loss of life.

The Governor commiserated with the Jumbo Ochigbo family, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the people of Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State over the sad loss.
