Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a Beninoise, Kwenume Ojo, also known as Abiodun, for allegedly killing her 32-year-old husband, Jimoh Ojo in the Yaba area of the state.
The incident which happened on Friday at Apolo Street, Makoko, Yaba area of the State saw the deceased who was asleep been forced by his wife to drink a poisonous soft drink which she got from a relative of her boyfriend as she was forced to marry Ojo.
Reacting to the incident, Jimoh’s in-law, Rotimi Akinlagun, disclosed that Ojo was retarded; this was responsible for his inability to get a wife, adding that the union of the deceased to Kwenume was arranged by the two families.
He said, “Jimoh was a carpenter. When he was born, he fell sick and that affected his health as he became retarded.
“When he became mature, we decided to get him a wife. We started asking around for anybody who could give him a wife.
“Kwenume’s father heard and he contacted Jimoh’s family. He gave them Kwenume to become Jimoh’s wife. She had no choice in the matter.”
It was gathered that Kwenume’s father prevented her from marrying her boyfriend due to the maltreatment of the suspect’s sister, who was married into the boyfriend’s family.
Kwenume was said to have gotten pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl, christened Hannah and upon her child birth she became attracted to her former boyfriend and they started seeing each other.
In order to marry her boyfriend, she was said to have collected the poison from her lover’s elder brother, Wensu, a herbalist, which she used in snuffing life out of her husband.
She confessed to the crime, saying the suspect collected the poison with which she used in killing her husband from her boyfriend’s brother who resides in the Sogunro, Iwaya area of the state.
The timely intervention of policemen from the Adekunle Division saved the two suspects from been lynched by youths in the area, while the body of the deceased was taken to an undisclosed mortuary.
Confirming the tragedy, the Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, said the case has been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation.
“The woman and her accomplice are in custody. The case has been transferred to the DCI for investigation,” Nwosu said.
