Martin Harnik’s late double, could not stop Bayern Munich from winning their third trophy of a remarkable season, as the Bundesliga champions ran out 3-2 winners in the final of the German Cup.
Thomas Muller opened scoring in the 31st minute from the penalty spot, after Serdar Tasci fouled Arjen Robben in the area. Robben was again the creator of the second goal, as he fed Mario Gomez who had the simple task of tapping the ball into an empty net.
Gomez scored again in the 61st minute, to effectively end the game as a contest, with Muller acting as provider this time.
Harnik then scored twice within nine minutes to set up a grandstand finish, but the Bavarians, who won the League with a 25-point gap and lifted the Champions League at Wembley, held their nerves to give Jupp Heynckes a befitting farewell.
It is a record 16th German cup for Bayern and they join an exclusive league of clubs like Celtic in 1967, Ajax in 1972, PSV Eindhoven in 1988, Manchester United in 1999, Guardiola’s Barcelona in 2009, and Inter Milan in 2010, who have previously won the treble.
