Bayelsa says wedding of Jonathan’s daughter did not paralyse economic activities

Bayelsa State government has denied reports that economic activities were paralysed before and during the wedding of President Goodluck Jonathan’s foster daughter.

In a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, the state government said it shut down only Kpansia Saturday market which is at the heart of the venue of the event to avert chaos.

“The only place affected is the Kpansia market, which is a traditional Saturday market and incidentally, it is situated at the heart of the venue of the event,” it said.

“It is only reasonable to close the market in the best interest of all concerned. It does not make any sense to have both the market and the ceremony go on at the same time. This would be chaotic, with inherent inconveniences.

“Also, the decision to stop construction work on major roads in Yenagoa Today is mainly for security reasons and to allow a better flow of traffic along the routes leading to the venue of the marriage,” Markson explained.

The CPS insisted that “the state’s economy is not affected, as people have been going about their activities without hindrance”

“It is therefore, not true that the state and in particular, Yenagoa, has been shut down because of the event,” the statement concluded.
