Bayelsa polls: Beware of political NGOs – APC tells INEC

The Sylva-Igiri Campaign Organization of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be weary of political pressure groups masquerading as NGOs ahead of the Dec. 5 governorship election in the state.

The organization’s Director of Media and Publicity, Chief Nathan Egba, in a statement issued on Friday in Yenagoa, urged the electoral body to ensure strict compliance to laid down rules in the accreditation of election monitors and observers for the forthcoming elections in the state.

He explained that the warning became necessary against the backdrop of the recent purported public endorsement of Governor Seriake Dickson of the PDP for a second term in office by over 400 Non-governmental organizations(NGOs) in the state.

The statement appealed to INEC to be cautious and vigilant in dealing with such NGOs that had become political and publicly identifying with a particular candidate in the election.

Egba disclosed that the APC had obtained a comprehensive list of the political NGOs and called on INEC not to make mistake of accrediting such groups as either election monitors or observers for the forthcoming poll.

The APC campaign spokesperson also raised concerns over alleged activities of some staff of INEC who he accused of showing sympathy and solidarity to the ruling PDP in the state

He said: “While our campaign organisation is irrevocably committed to ensuring peaceful and credible poll, the electoral body must also purge some of its staff and personnel who are believed to be showing sympathy to the ruling party in the state.

“We have been inundated with calls and reports about a particular senior member of the commission in the state headquarters who is a PDP agent because of the role he played in the last April general elections working closely with appointees of Governor Dickson.”
