The re-election bid of Governor Seriake Dickson on Monday received a boost as a coalition of non-governmental organizations and civil society groups mobilized support for him at a mega rally held in Yenagoa.
The group tagged the rally, “Operation Reject Sylva and APC in Bayelsa.”
DAILY POST gathered that the civil society groups with over 5,000 membership drawn from the eight local government areas of the state, converged at the popular Peace Park in Yenagoa to demonstrate their support for Dickson.
The group commended the efforts of the Governor Dickson-led administration, especially in the areas of peace and security, education, primary health care and job creation.
According to spokesperson the groups, Hon. Joseph Kemeagbeye, who spoke on behalf of leaders of the various groups, Dickson’s accomplishments in his first tenure as governor necessitated the group’s call for his re-election.
Kemeagbeye, a former Speaker of the old Rivers State House of Assembly, said the groups would not rest on their oars until their set goal of returning Dickson was achieved.
While describing the developmental strides of the Dickson’s administration as unprecedented, the former lawmaker said that going by what the Governor has achieved in less than four years in office, it was therefore necessary to give him another opportunity.
“While other states are taking both local and foreign loans, Dickson is busy repaying debt owed by the immediate past administration. Also, it is on record, that Bayelsa remains one of the few states in the federation that is not owing its workforce.
“I make bold to say that, Governor Dickson has been able to liberate Bayelsa state. Unlike in the past, people can now sleep with their two eyes closed. Also, some communities in the hinterland are now accessible by road.
“People should ask APC and its flag bearer to show their achievements, while in office as the third civilian governor of the state, in spite of the huge allocation from the Federation account,” Kemeagbeye said.
He explained that it was based on the numerous achievements of Dickson that the NGOs and civil society groups had decided they would support Governor Dickson come the 5th of December, 2015.
Responding, Governor Dickson expressed appreciation to the organizers of the rally, describing the event as heartwarming.
He said his administration owed posterity a legacy of sustainable development, a secured future and human capacity development, which have been the cardinal objectives of his Restoration Government.
The governor thanked the people of the state for their support over the past three and half years, assuring that the coming election would be conducted on a one man, one vote basis, as there would be no room for rigging.
