The Bayelsa State Government has released the sum of N3 billion for the completion of the Nembe-Ogbia road in the state, a project which was originally awarded by the Niger Delta Development Commission(NDDC).
Governor Seriake Dickson, who gave the directive for the released of the money, said that his administration’s decision to come into the road project was borne out of his personal love for the Nembe people and the desire to spread development to all parts of the state.
Dickson made the disclosure last Saturday at Nembe- Ogbolomabiri, when he commissioned the Nembe City Sports Stadium, a project executed by his administration to bring sports development to the area.
He said that he would not to be distracted by the activities of his detractors in implementing the development plans of his present administration’s restoration agenda.
The Governor said the state government decided to intervene in the project, which had suffered setbacks for decades, to fulfill its electioneering promises to the people of Nembe.
He said: ” You know people will always talk whatever they like, but don’t mind them. If you give 3 billion naira cash to enable the contractor to finish a road project that has been off and on for over 15 years and people are telling stories, would you join issues with them?
“Simply allow them to continue their talk, because you can’t stop them from talking.
“We are not talkers. We are doers and I can assure you that, no talk and nobody can stop us from doing the work of the people.”
Dickson warned the people of the area not to join his detractors in perpetrating criminality, stressing that his administration has succeeded in enthroning peace and providing facilities for a positive development of the youths.
According to him, “Instead of nurturing friendships, people were promoting animosity and by the grace of God Almighty, our government has been used to bring back peace in our communities and the state, in general.”
The Governor said that the road project, which was being undertaken by the NDDC would not have reached its present level of completion, without the intervention funds from the state government and assured the people of Nembe of more dividends of democracy.
While expressing gratitude to the people for their support for his administration, Dickson said the government would soon mobilise the contractors to commence work on another stadium at Nembe-Bassambiri.
He explained that the state government was building sporting facilities across the state to provide platforms for youths to develop their talents and achieve their dreams.
The Governor called on the people of Nembe to continue to complement the efforts of the government in maintaining the prevailing peace in the area.
In his remarks, the State Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral John Jonah(rtd.), observed that the Nembe Kingdom had never had it so good in terms of having its fair share of projects from the government of the day.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of Nembe Local Government Council, Mr Eminah Bioghoemi noted that, the existence of the facility would promote sports development, especially soccer in the area.
