Worried over the seemingly increasing attacks and assault on Nigerian media and journalists carrying out their legitimate duties, the Bauchi State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, on Thursday staged a protest in line with the directive from it’s national headquarters
The state chairman of the NUJ, Ibrahim Mohammed Goje, who led the protest at the NUJ secretariat in Bauchi, said, “The protest followed the directive from NUJ national secretariat, apparently to kick against the attacks and assaults on the Nigerian media, hence obstructing members from performing their legitimate duties”.
The chairman noted with alarm the action of the Oyo State Government in demolishing parts of the building housing Fresh FM station in Ibadan.
He described the governor’s action as arbitrary, insensitive and punitive, adding that it was meant to stifle the media.
“The protest is to draw the government to the regional conference on safety and protection of journalists in Africa as a whole” added Goje.
He, however, stressed that journalists take greater risks to scout for news for dissemination for the benefits of not only the government but the masses even ar war fronts.
The NUJ, therefore, condemned in totality such act of impunity with a promise to work closely with all for national development.
