Bartomeu wins Barcelona’s presidential election

Josep Maria Bartomeu will continue as Barcelona’s president, after defeating Joan Laporta, Agusti Benedito and Toni Freixa in Saturday’s election.

Bartomeu’s winning tool was the La Liga team’s success last season, when they won a history-making Treble.

The 52-year-old won 54.63% of the total votes cast. Laporta came second (33.03%), while Benedito (7.16%) and Freixa (3.70%) were further behind.

Bartomeu became Barcelona president in January 2014, after Sandro Rosell resigned and will now be in charge for six more years.

“We must continue to be the number one club and these six years are very important,” Bartomeu said after casting his vote on Saturday morning.

Barcelona are owned by over 150,000 members, but only 43 percent turned out to vote.
