Barcelona wanted Aguero, not Suarez – Zubizarreta

Former Barcelona sporting director, Andoni Zubizarreta, has revealed that the club signed Luis Suarez, because they failed in their attempt to land Sergio Aguero from Manchester City.

Suarez was signed from Liverpool in the summer of 2014, in a deal worth £75million, but the Spanish giants would have preferred another South American striker.

“We had a few options. Our first choice was not Suarez — he knows this,” Zubizarreta said.

“In the winter, we tried to sign Aguero. But it didn’t come off.

“In this situation, there was no doubt: Luis Suarez became our only objective.”

Suarez has gone on to score 54 goals in 72 games for Barcelona and helped the Nou Camp team to the treble last year.
