Banker who allegedly hired assassins to kill husband granted N1m bail

An Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ court sitting in Lagos, Tuesday granted a N1m bail to a banker, Oluchi Tochukwu, who allegedly hired assassins to slay her ex-husband identified as Tochukwu Onyebuchi.

She was arraigned alongside the two suspected assassins.

The banker was apprehended in October after luck ran out of the suspected assassins – Kingsley Ikechukwu, 36, and Chigozie Smart, 32.

DAILY POST had reported that the police in Ogun state intercepted and arrested them at Ijebu-Ode while attempting to escape to Onitsha with the victim’s Range Rover Jeep.

Although Onyebuchi had denied contracting the suspects and one other at large to assassinate her husband, the prosecutor, Insp. Julius Babatope, told the court Onyebuchi hired the two assassins to kill her husband on October 9 at No. 18, Fatai Kofo Street, Agungi, Lekki.

The prosecutor added that the accused took with her the victim’s car , HP laptop, iPhone, car documents and other valuables estimated at N9.3 million.

“Onyebuchi had told the assassins where she had kept the machete, cutlass and acid in her husband’s house which they were to use to kill him.

“The alleged assassins were caught absconding with the victim’s bloodstained Range Rover to deliver the car to Onyebuchi’s brother in Anambra,” the prosecutor added.

The accused persons, who are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, robbery and attempted murder, pleaded not guilty.

In his ruling, the chief Magistrate, M.O. Olajuwon ordered that the two alleged hired assassins, Chigozie Nworie and Kingsley Ofelete, be kept in custody at the Ikoyi Prisons, while he granted Onyebuchi a N1m bail.

Olajuwon adjourned the case to January 23 for hearing.
