The inspector general of police (IGP), Solomon Arase, has restated his earlier order on the removal of road blocks on the nation’s highways.

The IGP stated this in Jos during his maiden visit to the Plateau Command of the police force.

According to him, the decision of the force to remove roadblocks from the highways was part of its efforts to curb corruption among its officers and men.

‘’I have viewed police roadblocks not as a means of promoting effective policing, but rather an avenue for the promotion of corruption and extortion among our officers and men.

‘’This, over time, has made the public to view the police force as a ground for breeding corrupt minds, and I think with that, our image is being dented and dragged to the mud.

‘’So, let me make it clear again, any officer caught at any roadblock will be severely sanctioned,’’ he said.

Continuing, Arase said there would still be ‘’stop and search’’ operations once in a while on the highways, but insisting that they must be premised on concrete intelligent information.

He advised officers and men to desist from corruption and extortion of members of the public, as anyone caught would face the full wrath of the law, adding that under his watch as the police boss, all officers and men would be accorded a better life in terms of welfare, as that would go a long way to reduce incidents of corruption within the force.
