Ban on okada affects other security agencies – Police

The Police Command in Enugu State says the law banning the use of motorcycles within Enugu metropolis is binding on all security operatives.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Ebere Amaraizu, made this known in a statement in Enugu at the weekend.

According to him, the ban on the use of motorcycle in Enugu metropolis is still in force.

Amaraizu said: “Anyone violating the law will be apprehended and prosecuted in line with the provisions of the relevant sections of the law irrespective of his and her status.

“We will henceforth apprehend and prosecute riders and users of motorcycle within Enugu metropolis.”

Amaraizu said that the ban covers urban local governments of Enugu North, Enugu East and Enugu South adding that it was binding on personnel of sister security agencies and the police.

He said: “The attention of the command has been drawn to activities of some members of the public and some security personnel who ride their motorcycles in the areas mentioned, thereby contravening relevant sections of the law on the use of motorcycles within the metropolis.

“To this end, the command further wishes to remind members of the public and relevant agencies that anyone caught will be made to face the full weight of the law as security operatives of the command has been charged to fish out those in this habit for appropriate action.

“The action included arresting of such operators, impounding of the said motorcycles, and prosecuting of offenders in accordance with the relevant provisions of the law.’’

Amaraizu, however, noted that those that would operate in Enugu metropolis were registered and authorised courier services that have duly obtained their permit from the appropriate quarters.
