Ban on fireworks, knockouts subsists – Rivers Police warns residents

The Rivers state Police Command has said it is yet to give any contrary directive on the use of fireworks and knockouts in the state.

The Police in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Mohammad said it is reminding members of the public of the use of knockouts.

Mohammad appealed to parents to curb the excesses of their children in the use of fireworks. He said the blast of fireworks threatens the vulnerable public.

While warning those who use firewoks to stop forthwith, Mohammad said the issue of security should concern everyone and not to be left for agencies alone.

“It has come to the notice of the Rivers State Police Command that in spite of its earlier statement reminding members of the public and corporate bodies that the ban on the blast of knockouts and fireworks in the state is still in full force, some unpatriotic element are in the awkward habit of blasting same, thereby disturbing the existing public peace and causing unnecessary panic.

“The Command further craves the indulgence of parents/guardians not to relent on warning their children/ward to discontinue from the use of fireworks and knockouts. Retailers of such goods are equally advised and warned to withdraw from the sale these products. Anyone arrested either selling or blasting knockouts and fireworks would be made to face the full brunt of the law.

“The Command also wishes to remind members of the public that the issue of securing their lives and property should not be left to security agents alone as they too have a role to play by being security conscious at all times.

“The Command appeals to the members of the public to report suspicious activities to the police.”
