Bama: NEMA donates eight trucks of relief materials to displaced people


The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) yesterday presented eight trucks of relief materials to people who were displaced from their homes following the Boko Haram insurgents attack on Bama town last week.

NEMA Director General, Alhaji Sani Mohammed Sidi who flagged off the distribution in Maiduguri, said the relief materials were for 12,000 Internally Displaced People (IDP’s) from Bama who were registered and are now at the NYSC orientation camp and the Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS), Yerwa

“What we have done today is a flag off of assistance to our brothers and sisters who met challenges in Bama, and when they came to Maiduguri, the situation did not only over whelm Borno State government but the generosity and kindness of the populace of Maiduguri who have been living with this challenges for years now, and that is why we are here to support them. We are here to give them (The state government) all the technical and materials support and as of today with 8 trailers load of assorted relief items.” The NEMA boss said.

The NEMA boss who was represented by the Agency Director of Research and Planning, Dr Zanna Mohammed said the relief materials were to compliment the effort of the Borno State government in addressing the problem of the displaced people.

According to him, President Goodluck Jonathan personally directed the Agency to delivered 8 trucks of relief materials to cushion the hardship of the displaced people.

“These items will be managed by NEMA, Borno committee and the security agencies. The intention is to bring succor to our displaced brothers not only in terms of food, beddings and other relief materials, but we are also in a position to render any medical assistance that may be required.” Mohammed added.

He also said that the assistance to the people will continue even after they have left the camps to their homes.

“After people have gone back to their homes from the camp, we are not abandoning them, we are going to continue rendering assistance to them. The federal government is aware that farming activities have been affected,” he said.

Dr Zanna also stated that the agency was working in collaboration with Red Cross, state Ministry of Health and the security agencies to ensure that epidemics like cholera, malaria and other communicable diseases do not spread at the camps.

He explained that the Federal Government is doing everything possible to ensure that the displaced people return back to their homes.

Chairman of the committee set up by the Borno State government, Alhaji Usman Jiddah Shuwa, while receiving the materials thanked NEMA for coming to the aid of the displaced people.

He also disclosed that governor Shettima has approved the sum of N100 million to cater for the plight of displaced people from the town.
