Bama boils again: Many killed, prisoners freed

Bama town, Bama local government area of Borno state was attacked today(Wednesday) by gunmen who attacked security operatives in a battle that ends the lives of many people. Casualty figure is yet to be confirmed.

DailyPost gathered that the violence was as a result of the last month attack on the DPO, Eko Law in Bama local government council which resulted in the burning of Bama market and some residential areas. Trouble has continued to frustrate activities in the local government, particularly today’s attack.

According to reports, Police Barracks, prison and schools were touched, resulting into the death of many, particularly prison officials, where the attackers also set all the prisoners free.

A resident, Umara Sanda, who fled the council this afternoon to Maiduguri told DailyPost that the sect members came out in numbers with sophisticated weapons on what could be described as revenge mission where they attack the police and every other security operatives in the local government.

He said, ” We saw them parading the streets in the town with guns before the shooting started, I was actually about to leave the town when the whole town turned zone with the sound of gun shots almost everywhere. I managed to leave the town before it got worse. From what I have been told, the town is currently a no go area with dead bodies littered on the streets.”

He said the fight which started in the morning between 6am and 7am was a fierce one . According to him, he learnt that they also attempted to burn down the Shehu’s palace, but were repelled by security forces.

It would be recalled that during the visit of the Borno state governor to Bama last month, following the attack on the DPO and his men, some of the residents had told the governor that they. Were ready to spill blood if the military were not withdrawn from the town.

DailyPost also gathered that non-indigenes apart from security operatives and their families had since fled the town as a result of the series of attacks, killings and destruction of their property by the sect members.

Several attempts made to get the spokesman of the JTF, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa to get details of the renewed violence and casualty figure did not yield result as he was said to have left for Bama, with some troops from Maiduguri.
