Ballon d’Or 2018: Why Messi, Ronaldo, others shouldn’t win award – Griezmann

Atletico Madrid striker, Antione Griezmann has called for the Ballon d’Or to be given to a member of the France 2018 World Cup winning team.

Recall that a 30-man shortlist for this year’s Ballon d’Or award was announced on Monday.

Griezmann, who scored four goals for France in Russia this summer as they won their second world title, beating Croatia 4-2 in the final, is against the Ballon d’Or going to Barcelona star, Lionel Messi and Real Madrid forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, who have both dominated the award in the past decade.

The pair had won an incredible five awards each in that time frame, with Ronaldo equaling Messi’s tally last year.

“We are world champions, we’re part of the best team in the world,” Griezmann told France Football.

“In this best team in the world, there must be the best player in the world, right? In any case, that’s what I think. Afterwards, there are votes, opinions, different judgements. But I think that a Frenchman must win the Ballon d’Or this year.”

The likes of Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, Kylian Mbappe and Raphael Varane all put in strong performances in Russia, but Griezmann appears to be the leading French candidate for the prize.

The 2018 Ballon d’ Or award will take place on 3rd December, 2018.
