Mr Akolo Olakunle, the Public Education Officer of the Kwara Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission, has blamed most road accidents in the country to bad road designs.

Olakunle made the observation while delivering a lecture at the annual get-together of the Unilorin Drivers Welfare Association on Monday at the University of Ilorin.

He said road safety guidelines were meant to encompass the whole range of road users from a common pedestrian to a vehicle driver.

“All road users are the products of some forms of education or training, however informal or intermittent,” he said.

Olakunle said the importance of formal training in road safety “has been underestimated in the past because of the mistaken belief that the lessons to be learnt are simple and the tasks to be performed are elementary”.

He identified drivers’ fault; mechanical failures; bad weather and non-adherence to traffic rules and regulations as the other reasons responsible for road accidents.

“Always keep in mind that the person you kill in an accident might be one out of one billion, but for his family he might be the only bread winner and the dearest,” he said.

Mr Dada Obafemi, the Registrar of the University of Ilorin, advised the drivers to be cautious while on the wheels and always maintain good personal hygiene.

The Chairman of the Unilorin Drivers Welfare Association, Mr Joshua Olatunde, thanked the university authority for its support toward the holding of the workshop. (NAN)
