“Bad leadership and corruption, bane of terrorism” – Ex-IGP, Jimeta

Mohammed Gambo Jimeta

A former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Gambo Jimeta, has stated that the deplorable state of the nation’s security was a sign of bad leadership.

Jimeta, who particularly spoke about the Boko Haram insurgency, admonished the Federal Government against handling the problem and other related issues lightly.

Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja, the former IGP who was the chairman of a national security summit organized by the Nigeria Police and the Vanguard Newspapers, said, “Owing to prolonged bad leadership, corruption and insensitivity to the plight of the ordinary people, successive governments have entrenched a culture of misplaced priority.

“So, we are witnesses to what had been happening since independence. Gradually this notion of not providing for the basic needs of our people brought us to our knees. Everybody is crying; everybody is kneeling down.

Describing the present security situation as “self-inflicted”, the statesman noted that “If one Nigerian has a feeling of insecurity and he is afraid to go about his business and enjoy the God given rights that a state is supposed to give him, it is that one person that is weakening the well-being of the state.

“What I want us to understand is that our current situation is very self-inflicted, arising not only from the situation in Nigeria, but almost all developing countries. You cannot have a state and fail to provide for the institutions of the state that are supposed to secure the state and therefore its citizens,” he added.
