The Chairman of Orumba North Local Government Council in Anambra State, Mr Obinna Ikwueto has raised an alarm over the danger posed by gully erosion in Awgbu community and people of that area.
Ikwueto at the council headquarters on Tuesday expressed concerns while reacting to questions about the gully in Ajali, which was affecting the Amaokpala-Awgbu road.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the gully erosion of many meters in depth and width had reached the only road that links Orumba North and Orumba South to Awka, the capital city.
According to him, people could get to Awgbu through the Nibo-Mbaukwu-Umuawulu route.
Ikwueto described the situation as an emergency that needed urgent attention and control.
He said the road was no longer safe and that the entire community was also at the risk of being permanently displaced.
According to him, “it is a very big erosion menace, we have to use red tape and bamboo sticks to make caution signs to show there is danger there.
“This is dangerous to motorists as the shoulders of the one lane road have collapsed.
“The road will soon collapse and the villagers are also in serious danger of losing their ancestral homes.
“Just last week, a full loaded passengers vehicle that was avoiding a truck almost fell into the ditch, we are calling on the state government under Gov. Willie Obiano to come to the rescue,” he said.
Ikwueto however thanked the government for the palliative works going on at the Federal Polytechnic Oko stretch of Amaokpala-Oko-Ekwulobia road which also was in bad shape.
NAN reports that Orumba North has other massive gully erosion sites including the Nanka and Oli gully.
