A Presidential Adviser in the Second Republic, Tanko Yakasai, has cautioned members of the newly formed All Progressive Congress (APC) to avoid acts capable of tarnishing the image of the unified party.
The former Chairman of the Elders Committee of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), described the recent merger of opposition parties as a wonderful idea that will go a long way in promoting national unity and cohesion.
He said the merger was in the best interest of the country, as it would create stability in the polity.
“This will address the basic problems in party politics, which is fragmentation that makes it difficult to steer confidence across the country as well as reduce them to regional and tribal organisations with huge limitations to achieve national goals.”
“If properly nurtured and positioned, APC will give the Peoples Democratic Party a tough fight because of its capability to generate goodwill across the country.
“If devoid of hatred and other tendencies that could frustrate or derail its focus, the APC will go a long way because political parties in its fold cut across the six geo-political zones.”
He believes that alliance of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigeria’s People’s Party (ANPP) and others pose a threat to the ruling PDP.
“For the first time, opposition leaders have the opportunity to present itself as credible alternative to PDP,” Tanko said.
He warned APC leaders in the merger not to allow their personal ambition to override the collective goal.
“My quarrel with Nigerians is that we are always jumping the gun, instead of nurturing this party to maturity and positioning it for the challenges of 2015, ambition for political offices under the platform is beginning to take the centre stage. Why should that come up now that the party is in its formative stage?” Yakasai queried.
