Atiku says Nigeria’s democracy is on trial, calls for calm

Former Vice President and chieftain of the All progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has called for calm in the face of Tuesday’s bombings which claimed several lives in Borno and Yobe states as well as the explosions and gun attacks at the APC gubernatorial campaign rally in Rivers State that had many people injured.

Disclosing this in a statement released by the Atiku Media Office on Wednesday, the APC chieftain noted that Nigeria’s democracy was on trial and called on Nigerians never to give up their desire for change notwithstanding the evident manifestations of insurgents or desperate politicians.

He stressed that, “Nigeria’s democracy can and must withstand terror, whether the terror is from insurgents or from desperate politicians, in the end, democracy must prevail.”

While calling for a strong bipartisan signal or approach against those who are willing to sacrifice the nation for political gain, the ex-Vice President said “Our political elders must lift up their voices against violent desperados within their parties, and anyone found guilty should be punished severely and openly.”

Atiku concluded by urging Nigerians to continue being vigilant in view of the fact that this is an election period period. He said that suspicious people or activities should be reported to relevant authorities
