The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that it would not spare Vice-Chancellors who had not done enough to ensure peace and stability in their institutions.
The National President, Dr Nasir Fagge, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.
Fagge said that some of the vice-chancellors had deviated from their mandatory role of ensuring peace and stability for academic progress to creating confusion among staff and other unions.
He cited the lingering crisis at the Lagos State University (LASU) as one of the institutions where, according to him, an overzealous vice-chancellor was out to destroy the institution.
“We had a situation where all the trade unions on campus had to rise up and fight the then vice-chancellor to a standstill,’’ he told NAN on telephone.
“We are happy that the Lagos State Government, which cherishes and knows the need for stability in an academic setting, had to intervene.
“With that vice-chancellor out now, we equally hope that his successor will be able to turn around the plight of the institution for good so that it begins to move to higher pedestal.’’
He also said that the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso had been suffering because of having two masters.
According to him, the institution was the only university in the country with two visitors.
He noted that it was becoming easy for these visitors to refuse to fund the university adequately.
“They rather find it convenient to pass the buck on each other as regards the plight of the university.
“We believe that the two visitors must have to sit down and decide the fate of this institution so that should anything happen to the university; one will know where to trade the blame.
“We as ASUU will not sit back and watch any person or group of persons destroy what government and other critical stakeholders are toiling hard to build in the interest of our children,’’ he warned. (NAN)
