ASUU strike: What Vice Chancellors discussed – VC, FUT Minna

The Committee of Vice-Chancellors (VC) of Nigerian Universities yesterday met in Abuja over the ongoing strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, Professor Muftau Akanji, said the meeting deliberated on the sutuation and made recommendations to the federal government on the way forward.

“We asked that a middle way should be found into resolving the crisis”, he told Thisday.

Akanji described the strike as “very unfortunate”.

“It has come at a time many universities are trying to stabilise their academic calendar.

“For us in the FUT, everything would have been normal this year”.

Akanji pleaded with both the federal government and ASUU to settle their differences in the interest of the education sector, parents and students.

ASUU began a nationwide strike on August 13 to press its demands on funding of universities and welfare of lecturers.

Its negotiating team and government had a meeting which ended in the early hours of Friday.

“Now we have some concrete proposal that we will take back to our members for consideration,” ASUU President, Biodun Ogunyemi, told newsmen.
