The Chairman of the Universities Needs Implementation Committee and Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam on Tuesday, appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its strike.
He said now that the federal government was willing to offer N130 billion to resolve the matter, the body should reconsider going on with the strike.
Speaking with State House correspondents in Abuja, Suswan said the government has decided to inject N100 billion into the infrastructures of 61 universities in the country and N30 billion for staff allowances.
But ASUU insists it would not accept anything short of N87 billion, which is the accumulated earned allowances of staff based on the agreements reached with the Federal Government in 2009.
The governor however noted that “for government shifting ground from no money to agreeing to assist the Governing Councils of universities with N30 billion for the earned allowances, the lecturers should please call off the strike and continue with its dialogue with the government.”
He disclosed that the federal government will meet the universities’ councils and vice chancellors this week to update them on the decisions taken so far.
