ASUU strike: AAU, UNIBEN lecturers join action

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities at the University of Benin and the Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, in Edo State, have joined the ongoing industrial action.

DAILY POST reports that the National President of the union, Dr. Biodun Ogunyemi, had announced the commencement of the strike on Monday during a meeting of the National Executive Council of ASUU in Abuja.

The chapter Chairman of the union, Prof. Julius Iyasele, told newsmen that the industrial action would be fully declared on Wednesday.

“Obviously, it is a nationwide strike. Final-year students are still here carrying out their final-year projects.

“By Wednesday, we will declare the strike here fully. We will start our implementation on Wednesday,” Iyasele added.

At AAU, it was gathered many students of the institution had their lectures cancelled on Monday.

It was also learnt that the strike may affect the forthcoming examination of the students, which is scheduled to hold at the end of August.

But the chairman of ASUU in the university, Prof. Monday Igbafen, said that the union would not grant any waiver for anyone as the strike would be fully adhered to.

Igbafen said, “We are fully part of the strike but we are meeting at our congress on Wednesday to finally brief our members of all the details about the strike and from there, we will leave for our various homes.

“There is no waiver for anybody. The national president said it all. We want to use the strike to make the government responsible because the government we understand is not responsible.”
