The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma chapter, has refuted claims that the institution will be reopening for its academic activities a few weeks from now. This was contained in a statement signed by the chairperson, ASUU, AAU chapter, Dr. Monday Igbafen and made available to newsmen in Benin.

Igbafen said that plans by the university administration to reopen the institution for academic activities a few weeks from now, would not work.

“We wish to notify the public that we just closed from our congress meeting this morning, the 21st of January, 2019, and resolved to continue with the nationwide strike approved by our national body on 4th of November, 2018, a strike that is meant to revitalise public universities, including our own AAU, Ekpoma.

“For ASUU, AAU, Ekpoma, it is only the national leadership of the union that can direct the suspension of the strike. We are intact and in support of our national strike action.

“ASUU, AAU, Ekpoma, wishes to advise our dear parents and guardians that ASUU, AAU, Ekpoma, is fully on strike and therefore, should be guided not to risk the lives of our dear students by allowing them to travel unnecessarily, because of a purported resumption of lectures.”

The release said it would be counterproductive to reopen the university, when members of the union would not be available to attend to the students or teach because of the ongoing strike.

“The strike is total, indefinite and comprehensive,” he emphasised.
