Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State and chairman of the Federal Government’s Needs Assessment Committee, Thursday appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to call off its lingering strike so students could go back to school.
The governor stated this in Makurdi, Benue State capital when the leadership of the National Union of Benue State students, NUBESS, paid him a courtesy visit.
Suswam noted that the federal government had ensured that the welfare of the striking lectures was enhanced and that there was need for them to end the strike in the general interest of the students.
Suswam said, “the federal government has shifted ground and so it is expected that ASUU too should show commitment by calling off the strike in the general interest of the students. I think the leadership of ASUU is misleading lecturers and students. ASUU should not play politics with the future of the students. They can call off the strike as the needs committee continue to negotiate on the matter.”
Meanwhile, ASUU Wednesday night vowed that there was no going back on the ongoing strike despite the N130 billion released by the federal government in an attempt to meet up with the Union’s demands.
