The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari on the recent directive he gave to the Accountant General of the Federation to include university lecturers in the Integrated Payroll Personnel System (IPPS).
The National Auditor of the union, Comrade Christ Piwuna, made this known during a public lecture organized by the Bauchi State University, Gadau Branch of the union entitled ” University Autonomy and Ethical Reorientation.”
He lamented that inclusion of universities in the system violates the agreement reached between the federal government and the union as the policy was against the law establishing universities and its amendment act.
According to him, ASUU was not totally against the policy opining that Governing Councils of Universities should be allowed to implement that for staff in their various institutions not the federal government.
He said to ensure autonomy for universities, there is need for financial Independence for them to promote scholarship and impart knowledge for societal development.
Also speaking, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Auwal Uba, lamented on some unethical practices in some universities, assuring that his administration will ensure discipline among his staff, adherence to principles of Integrity, Accountability, Professionalism, hard work and total commitment.
