The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos chapter, on Wednesday, accused the Lagos State Government of encouraging the crisis rocking Lagos State University (LASU).
ASUU’s Zonal Coordinator, Dr Sola Nasir lamented that Governor Babatunde Fashola last visited the institution in 2009, in contravention of the law which stipulates that the Governor in his capacity as Visitor must visit the school at least once every five years.
Speaking on the excesses of LASU Vice Chancellor, Professor Oladapo Obafunwa, Dr Nasir noted that LASU lecturers were being victimised because of their involvement in the recent strike.
He said: “After the strike action in Lagos State University which was suspended on July 14, 2014, the Lagos State University Administration, rather than entrenching standard academic practices has continued to fan the embers of crises, discord and thereby enthroning the culture of mediocrity and intimidation.”
The official also raised concern over the annual promotion exercise which he said was “inconclusive” in 2013, and not done at all in 2014.
He further alleged that Professor Tunde Fatunde, a Professor of French, was placed “on interdiction” and “half salary” by the Vice Challencor because the professor had been “rude” to the University Registrar, Mr Akin Lewis.
The Union disclosed that queries were served on three past Heads of Departments because “they insisted on best academic practices.”
ASUU also condemned what they called the “lopsided appointments made by the Vice Chancellor” into the University Senate, noting that a university is as good as its Senate.
Dr Nasir called on the Lagos State Government to call the Vice Chancellor to order.
“Witch-hunting of Union leaders and our members in the branch will not be tolerated”, he added.
The leadership also called on the Ogun State Government to address the issue of the payment of earned allowances to lecturers at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) and Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED).
