A week long education summit spearheaded by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU is to open in Abuja today, Dr. Dipo Fashina said in a statement at the weekend in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Fashina, a former president of ASUU and chairman of the planning committee for the summit said the aim of the summit was the restructuring of the nation’s education system.
The summit, with the theme ‘Towards a System of Education for Liberation in Nigeria’, will hold at the Conference Hall of Top Rank Hotel, Utako District, Abuja.
According to Fashina, other stakeholders involved in the summit are the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the federal and some state ministries of education.
Fashina, said in the statement that the country must restructure its educational system if it is to be a stakeholder in the global system.
“The summit will review the educational system with a view to restructuring it to liberate Nigerians.
“The educational system is one-sided, promoting the interests of the world’s powers, who colonised Africa, making the need to develop an educational system, which can serve the interests of Nigerians a necessity.
“The four main unions in tertiary institutions are organising a national education summit, the purpose of which is to look for what will be a liberating educational system in the country.
“Education in Nigeria is dysfunctional; it is one sided in the sense that it promotes the interests of the powers in the world, who have ruled Africa since slavery and after slavery”, the statement said
