Asaba community demands tighter security over suspected hoodlums operating at River Niger bank

The people of Asaba in Delta State on Thursday expressed fear over the activities of suspected hoodlums operating at the River Niger Bank, and called for a tighter security measures to bring the suspects to book.

Traditional Prime Minister of Asaba, (Iyase), Chief Patrick Onyeobi, who spoke to journalists in Asaba, said: “we are not comfortable with suspected hoodlums currently operating within the River Niger bank. They have robbed many unsuspecting persons in Asaba, and its environs and moved to the river bank where they take refuge. We want the security agents to fish them out as soon as possible.”

While calling on military and other security agencies to always patrol the banks of the River Niger, Chief Onyeobi disclosed that the activities of the suspected hoodlums in recent times have been disturbing, adding that their activities portend measures to upset the prevailing peace in Asaba and its environs. Chief Onyeobi said that the 63 brigade of the Nigeria Armed Forces in Asaba was a welcomed development as it would enhance the security of persons and property in Asaba, and charged the army to maintain cordial relationship with the civil populace as they go about their duties.

According to the Iyase, “what I would appeal is that, with the recent development, there is need for security in Asaba. Asaba at present, attracts all sorts of persons, the state government must endeavor to ensure that the residents of Asaba are protected.

“The people within the River Niger Banks are creating fear of the unknown, and they are suspected hoodlums.”
