Arsonists burn down INEC office in Rivers state [PHOTOS]

The Rivers state Police Command has confirmed the attack on Secretariat of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in Bori, the headquarters of Ogoni in Rivers state.

The attack is happening nine days to the rerun elections in the state.

The intent of the attack on the INEC office which is at Khana Local government area of the state is yet to be ascertained.

Meanwhile, Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers state, DSP Nnamdi Omoni told DAILY POST that the attack was carried out by arsonist.

He said, “we got the information midnight around 1am that there was an explosion in the INEC secretariat. We can now confirm that the office was attacked. It was razed by unknown arsonists. But we are investigating.

“Our men have been deployed to the scene to ensure there is no breakdown of order.”


Caretaker Chairman of Khana Local Government area, Gbana Erelo, told newsmen that the attack was the “handiwork of saboteurs who do not want the election to hold.

He said, “It is an act of those who don’t want election to be done. If you want election to be done, you will not do that kind of thing.”

In the meantime, the Police in Rivers state is expected to release a more comprehensive detail on the situation in Bori.

Bori is in Khana Local Government area, Rivers East Senatorial District where Senator Magnus Abe (APC) and Senator Olaka Nworgu (PDP) are keenly contesting.

It would be recalled that INEC cancelled the election in the area which include; Tai, Eleme, Khana, Gokana and Oyigbo on March 11 due to violence.
