Arsenal take up option to extend Cazorla’s contract

Arsenal have activated a clause in Santi Cazorla’s contract, which has seen his deal extended by two years.

The Spain international’s current contract was due to expire at the end of this season.

But an FA document shows that Arsenal took up the option on December 20, 2016. The club moved quickly to file the relevant paperwork with the FA, to avoid a scenario where Cazorla is eligible to speak with foreign clubs from January 1, 2017.

Cazorla has not played for the Gunners since October due to an Achilles injury. There are speculations he might not play again this secons, as he just had his second operation.

Manager Arsene Wenger said of the 32-year-old: “Santi is far from starting to run again.

“He had a little procedure and we have a meeting with the medical people today to see what it was really. Certainly he will not be available in the next six weeks that is for sure.”

The playmaker has scored 29 goals in 180 appearances since arriving from Malaga in 2012.
