Arsenal are ready to step up their interest in signing Karim Benzema, by tabling a £40million bid before Real Madrid.
Spanish journalist, Paco Gonzalez, this month claimed that Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger, called up Benzema a few times this summer, to discuss a possible move to the Emirates.
Wenger has been a firm admirer of his compatriot since his Lyon days and wants to finally link up with him ahead of next season.
Although both the player and Madrid are not keen on the transfer, Benzema might be forced to move eventually, with new manager Rafa Benitez looking to give Cristiano Ronaldo a more central attacking berth.
The 27-year-old recently signed a contract extension with Madrid, which expires in 2019.
Wenger is eyeing a new frontman, following the departures of Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo (to Ajax on loan).
