Arsenal have confirmed Unai Emery as their new head coach.
Manchester City’s assistant coach, Mikel Arteta, was the front-runner for the job but it was revealed last night that the former PSG manager, Emery, will instead take over headship of the north London club.
The 46-year-old Emery left the French champions after winning the treble last season.
The move however showed an evident shift in the club’s philosophy as they have appointed Emery as the ‘head coach’ and not manager – the title which Wenger held.
Arsenal Chief Executive, Ivan Gazidis, while confirming the appointment on Wednesday, told reporters, “Unai has an outstanding track record of success throughout his career, has developed some of the best young talents in Europe and plays an exciting, progressive style of football that fits Arsenal perfectly.
“His hard-working and passionate approach and his sense of values on and off the pitch make him the ideal person to take us forward.”
