The Nigerian army has assured that it would provide adequate security during the period of the 2015 general elections.
The army specifically said officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and election materials will be protected during and after the elections.
The assurance was given by the Commander of 2 Brigade Port Harcourt, Koko Essien at a media briefing held at the Bori Camp in Port Harcourt.
Essien told newsmen that the army will deploy its troops to cover both the land and waterways in other to halt any form of electoral offences.
While emphasising that the military will not condone any act of political thuggery that could hamper the process of the election, the Senior army officer urged the people to come out en-masse and participate in the poll.
According to him, “We have a mandate to support the success of these elections, and so, my men will provide security to INEC officials and materials on ground and waterways in a constitutional manner.
“Come March 28 and April 11, people should feel free and come out to vote any candidate of their choice because we are working with other sister security services to provide a top notch security.”
The Commander of 2 Brigade Port Harcourt, Koko Essien, however called for media partnership and support in the fight against oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the state. .
