Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, has admitted that if he had scored a second-half penalty, his side would have possibly defeated Iceland.
With the game poised at 1-1 after Alfred Finnbogason cancelled out Sergio Aguero’s opener, the South Americans were awarded a spot kick.
However, Messi’s effort was palmed away by goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson.
“If I scored the penalty, it would have changed everything in the game. I take full responsibility for missing it and letting the team down. We have to look forward from here.
“We don’t have to go crazy. The World Cup has just started and we knew it wouldn’t be easy for us. It’s a brawl because we deserved to win, but some things need to improve.
“We were superior. We tried to win but didn’t succeed. It was very painful to miss that penalty,” Messi told reporters.
On their next Group D fixture, he said: “We are going to beat Croatia. We have to.”
