Argentina are set to replace Belgium as the highest-ranked team in the world, when the next FIFA World Rankings are released in April.
Gerardo Martino’s team beat Chile 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier on Thursday, while Belgium were not in competitive action. This means that no matter what happens, Argentina will be No. 1.
Belgium has been on top since November, but will not be able to accrue more than 1,423 points after the international break. Argentina will be on 1,468 even if they lose at home to Bolivia on Tuesday.
All South American nations have an advantage this month, with CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers carrying more weight than international friendlies.
