Three years to the end of the second tenure of the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, there seems to have been an agreement within the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, as to who will succeed him in 2022.
National chairman of the party, Chief Victor Oye, in an interview with journalists, said that equity demands that the next governor of Anambra State in 2022 comes from Anambra South Senatorial district.
Oye said, “Is that in doubt? The zoning arrangement was started by Peter Obi as an APGA governor then.
“Obi insisted that the next governor that will succeed him should come from the northern district, and now that north has done five years, we have just three years to go, and it is very likely it will go to the south.
“When it has gone round, then it can start again from where it started. Everything about the future is in the hands of God, but as a political party, I would like it to go to the southern district for equity sake,” Oye stated.
Speaking on allegations that a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, who hails from Anambra South was most favoured by the party as the next governor of the state, Oye said there was no promise made to him (Soludo), saying that he still had the right to vie, and if the party chooses him to fly its flag, then he can run.
Reviewing his four years as national chairman of the party, Oye said the party had grown to a level where the welfare of its members should be given priority.
He said the first batch of a training to be organised, would be for the 36 state chairmen of the party and the Federal Capital Territory.
“We are going to look at the welfare of our members. We believe that this party has reached a level where it should be able to take care of its members, not politics, politics, politics all the time.
“We are working with some agencies on how we can send our 36 state chairmen and others abroad for leadership programmes, so that they get developed intellectually and even administratively, so that they acquire more skills on how to administer the party.
“This is something we have been doing silently, without announcing it, but this time we are going to promote it, so that it would reflect our overall vision.
“We are also looking at the intellectual capacity of the members. I believe that as you are giving to the party, the party should also give to you, by ensuring that our members get the opportunity to go for intellectual development abroad, and the party will sponsor them.
“We have a whole lot of things we set out to do, which I cannot espouse in this interview. We have very big plans for this party. Our expansion plan will continue, we want to come out with a more elaborate plan on how to begin to win elections in Nigeria in a more concrete form, one of the ways to do that is building confidence in the people of the party; build cohesion and synergy here and there.”
