APGA backs use of Military for elections

The All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, has thrown its weight behind the use of the military to supervise the general elections, notwithstanding oppositions from the APC and a high court judgment against the practice.

The decision of the party was made known by its Acting National Chairman, Chief Chris Uche, in an interview with The Punch in Umuahia.

According to the APGA boss, the security situation in the country means that nothing should be left to chance, arguing that the political environment was already tensed and that the police alone could not guarantee the peaceful conduct of the elections, necessitating the involvement of the military.

Uche said, “Anybody saying that the military should not be involved during the polls has a hidden agenda because the security situation is already too hot for the police to handle.”

He, however, contended that soldiers drafted for election duties should not beless than 50 yards away from the polling units to avoid a situation where they might intimidate voters.
