APC warns as Rivers Assembly approves N10bn loan for Wike

The Rivers State House of Assembly has approved the sum of ten billion naira loan facility for the State Government.

Speaker of the House, Ikunyi Awaji-Igbani, who read the request letter from the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike noted that the loan is to be taken from Zenith Bank to enable the state government commence projects in the state.

The Speaker, Awaji-Igbani also said measures have been put in place to service the loan facility to ensure it did not become a burden to the State government.

However, after putting the request of the Governor to debate, the lawmakers agreed that the loan be approved in the interest of the state.

“By this resolve therefore, this House hereby approves the request by the His Excellency, the Governor of Rivers state for a N10b loan facility from Zenith Bank to finance vital developmental projects in the state,” the Speaker said.

The House approved the loan on the notion that the immediate past administration of the state left an empty treasury.

DAILY POST reports that a motion seeking to address the deaths caused by the consumption of the killer local gin, ‘Ogogoro’ was presented by the Leader of House, Martin Amaewhule.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress, APC in the State has condemned the approval of the loan facility, which they said was too hasty on the part of the Nyesom Wike-led government, that is barely 2 weeks old.

State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Chris Finebone said the party “finds it curious that Wike is taking a loan after boasting that former President Goodluck Jonathan paid the Rivers state Government N5billion owed by the Federal government”.

The party also cautioned individuals, banks, and corporate organisations to avoid doing business with Governor Nyesom Wike, whom he said will soon be sacked.

Finebone said the move by Wike was in contrast to that of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who at the assumption of office proposed a bill to the State Assembly which sought to save N1b monthly for the state government.

According to the APC spokesman, “The APC will like to warn companies, individuals and Zenith Bank Plc. to distance themselves from the wave of bills as the hammer will fall very soon and they will be swept away by a certain wind of justice.

“Those who would have aided and abated in various designs to dupe Rivers people will have huge price to pay”.
